Ukulele Major Chords for Beginners

As you’re learning to play the ukulele, you’ll likely start by learning some of the easier major chords. Major and minor ukulele chords have completely different sounds – major chords are often described as having happy, bright sounds, while minor chords sound more melancholy and dark. While the patterns that create majors and minors are actually more complicated, that’s all you need to know for now as you get started with the ukulele.

What are the Basic Major Chords?

The basic major chords for the ukulele are C, D, E, F, G, A, and B. However, the B chord is pretty complex to play, so you likely won’t deal with it right away as you’re learning. The rest of these major ukulele chords are more straightforward, and with a bit of practice, they’re pretty easy to master.

Learn this First: The C Major Chord

One of the easiest major chords you’ll ever learn is the C chord. All you have to do to play it is hold down the first string on the third fret and start strumming all four strings. Usually, you use the ring finger to hold down that string. It’s a chord you can learn fast, and then you’re ready to strum and enjoy the beautiful sounds coming from your instrument.

G Major Chord

If you happen to play guitar, you’ll notice that the shape of the G chord is the same as the D major chord shape on a guitar. You place your index finger on the third string at the second fret, the ring finger on the second string at the third fret, and the middle finger goes on the first string on the second fret. Once your fingers are placed, this chord is strummed on all strings.

F Major Chord

Another simple chord to play on the ukulele is the F chord. All you do is put the middle finger on the fourth string at the second fret and the index finger on the second string at the first fret, strumming all strings.

More Major Chords

Both the D chord and A chord are both fairly simple ukulele chords to play. However, both the major E chord and major B chord can be more difficult. Master some of the simpler chords before you tackle those two.

Major chords – the most commonly used chords in music – offer beautiful, bright tones, and it’s fun to learn how to play them. Once you learn these chords, be sure to practice them regularly, so you’re ready to begin playing songs on your ukulele.
